Behind the Scenes: A Downtown NYC Video Shoot with Jon Waldman Productions
Back in 2023, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Jon Waldman Productions (free lance videographer NYC) on a NYC video production for a high-end design firm. It was one of those projects that perfectly captures why I love filmmaking — high energy, tight timelines, and a creative environment that demands focus, adaptability, and experience.
This shoot was a great example of how professional video production comes together when planning, teamwork, and execution align. As a past Maryland wedding videographer, working in New York City was a completely different experience from what I’m used to, and that challenge is what made it so rewarding.
Pre-Production
The day started with pre-production and on-set setup, making sure lighting was dialed in for the interviews and that all camera systems were ready to go. Proper preparation is essential on a fast-paced NYC video shoot, where time and efficiency matter.
For this production, we shot on a Sony FX3 and Sony FX6, two high-end cinema cameras known for their dynamic range, low-light performance, and cinematic image quality.
Production: Interviews and B-Roll
Once production began, we focused on scripted interviews. After just two to three takes, we knew we had captured exactly what we needed — clean, confident interviews that translated well on camera.
From there, we moved into filming b-roll, capturing natural interactions, detailed shots of the design work, and close-ups of the various prints created by the firm. These moments helped bring the story together and added depth to the final edit.
Wrapping Up the Shoot
After a long but productive day of filming, I wrapped up the gear and hopped on the train back to BWI Airport in Maryland. Shoots like this are a reminder of how valuable it is to step outside your comfort zone and work in demanding environments like New York City. It is completely different from being a wedding videographer in Baltimore MD.
Projects like this sharpen your skills and elevate your creative process. Collaborating on a NYC vproduction pushed me professionally and reinforced the importance of preparation, communication, and adaptability on set.
